U.S. Franciscans Release Statement on Executive Order Pertaining to Immigrants and Refugees Entering the U.S.

Recently, the seven United States Order of Friars Minor Provincials released the following statement on the president’s executive order pertaining to immigrants and refugees:”

The recent actions of President Donald J. Trump regarding the treatment of immigrants and refugees entering our country have been troubling to a wide ranging group of citizens across the United States. As Franciscans, we are morally outraged by and resolutely denounce the January 27, 2017 Executive Order addressing the U.S. immigrant and refugee admission program.

The Franciscan friars are members of the Order of Friars Minor, the Catholic religious community founded by St. Francis of Assisi in 1209. The province covers the western United States and serves in areas of parish ministry, outreach to the poor, retreat work, hospital and prison chaplaincy, education, social advocacy, and foreign and Native American missions.

St. Francis Center’s founder, Fr. Hugh Noonan, OFM, was a member of the Franciscan Friars of the St. Barbara Province, which comprises 165 friars in the western United States, and SFC continues in his tradition with our affiliation with the province and our commitment to feeding, serving, and walking with the poor as a community of hope in the spirit of Saint Francis of Assisi.
